Jeric In Motion

Shift gears

Some things are simply meant to be. If he isn’t acting, Jeric imagined he might be a nurse or as a musician, playing music everywhere he wants to. But as life would steer him in another path, he finds himself in the showbiz industry and acting – excelling in a craft that inspires a multitude of supporters.

Jeric describes his first big break in showbiz, “It was when I was cast to be part of the movie Dementia. I was very proud because I auditioned for that role, I worked hard to get that spot and that was a very big break for me because I was given the chance to work with the one and only Superstar Ms. Nora Aunor.” It was also how he got his nomination for New Actor of the Year in the 31st PMPC Star Awards for Movies for his portrayal of the role of Vincent in the movie.

Since then, Jeric has went on to bag more awards from the PMPC Star Awards in later years such as being recognized for Best Single Performance by an Actor and as a Male Acoustic Artist of the Year.

But it isn’t only the local award-giving bodies recognizing his top-caliber acting, Jeric is also making waves internationally.

With the indie film Broken Blooms directed by Louie Ignacio, Jeric bagged international acclaim from the Mokkho International Film Festival, Tagore International Film Festival, and the 17th Harlem International Film Festival as the Critics Choice for Best Actor in an Indie, Outstanding Achievements for Best Actor, and Best Actor, respectively. “I think there’s nothing more satisfying and memorable than those recognitions,” says Jeric about raising the Philippine flag in the international scene.

In Broken Blooms – the award-winning film that tackles the challenges faced by a young man in a blooming young marriage amidst the backdrop of a global pandemic – Jeric co-starred with fellow talented actors such as Therese Malvar, Jaclyn Jose, Lou Veloso, Royce Cabrera, and comedian Boobay.

Full Throttle

While it’s easy to only notice the glamor, Jeric is candid about the parts of the industry that require grit. “I auditioned for Encantadia and Mulawin and I was sad when I didn’t get the part because those two are my favorite shows in GMA and it was my dream to be a part of those shows. When I was not selected for the roles, it made me realize that if it’s not for you, God will not give it to you and that he has a better plan for you and it will come soon, you just need to be prepared for it,” he shares honestly.

True enough, things do turn around and pieces fall into their place in Jeric’s career.

Aside from receiving recognition here and abroad, this 2022, Jeric also stars as Dave at Start-Up PH, the GMA 7 adaptation of the hit 2020 K-drama series.

But fans are not the only ones who get starstruck. Even the multi-awarded actor admits not being immune to the excitement when he meets brilliant co-actors. “When I saw Ms. Bea Alonzo during our look test. I was so nervous and excited to see her because I was just watching her in her movies before but now, I get to see and work with her personally,” Jeric shared. “I was so nervous. I didn’t know how to not be intimidated by Ms. Bea Alonzo and Alden Richards because it’s the first time I worked with them and it’s a dream.”

With South Korean producer, Yu Sang-won, also lauding the GMA 7 adaptation, Jeric and the Start-Up PH team continue to give life to the beloved characters of the K-drama with the charm of the elements of Filipino primetime.

Despite these successes, Jeric knows to keep his eyes on maintaining a balance in life. As advice to his younger self, he would recommend slowing down to enjoy everything and to enjoy youth as fully as possible – a sage advice from an actor who knows the value of winning, the significance of treasuring success, and reflecting on the collective moments that continue to propel him to the top.

Jeric Gonzales has played a number of roles from anthologies, television series, and films. But at the end of the day, Jeric knows that none is more beloved among these characters than Jeric himself – the artist we get to admire in real life, not just in reel. Fans will be on the lookout for more characters Jeric will play in the future that will display the layers of depth in his masterclass talent – but just like each one has a pilot that sets the stage of meeting a new character, Jeric hopes we are also introduced to the actor behind the characters and the dreamer behind each achievement. Even with a name recognized by fans here and abroad, Jeric introduces himself beyond the achievements and beyond titles earned: “I hope that they will think that I am a pure and genuine person with the kindest heart, that I will not let people down, I will be the last person to turn my back on you and that you can trust me whenever you need me.”
